Chapter 15

Afton tugged the brush through her hair for the billionth time. If nature had transformed her into the most of her body’s potential, why hadn’t she been given tangle-free hair? The thick curly hair was a tangled mess. It had a life of its own, its mission to drive her insane. Every time she thought she had tamed it, wisps of hair escaped from their confinement. Afton was about to throw her brush in a fit of frustration when Lenore grabbed her wrist.

“Let me help you with that,” Lenore said in a calming voice. She took the brush and gently ran it through Afton’s hair. Lenore worked through the snags with the skill of a seasoned beautician. She wrapped the unyielding strands and strategically applied pins until she stood back and admired her handiwork. Afton stared in wonder at the coiffed masterpiece before her.

“Wow,” Afton said in wonder, “you are a miracle worker.”

“I am nothing of the kind,” Lenore replied. “To survive in this world, I needed to have a lot of patience. It is a trait all who dwell in the Nightshade universe should possess.” Afton figured it was Lenore’s way of telling her she needed to display more of the talent in the future.

She continued to stare at her reflection, considering Lenore’s words. Her week with Malice had been nothing compared to what Lenore had suffered at the hands of her father and the other vampires. Afton was pleased Lenore was here now with her, safe from further vampire violence.

“Where did they take you after we were separated?” Afton asked. She had always wondered where she had disappeared to. Guilt consumed her, since she would have been indirectly responsible for any punishment the woman had been subjected to.

“Originally I feared I would be given to the collective to feed on. Few survive the feeding attack of multiple vampires. As I was being led away, a lone vampire took possession of me. I was taken to the stronghold we just escaped from and was pretty much left alone. It was not long before we were reunited.”

For some reason she could not comprehend, Malice had rescued Lenore and kept her safe to ultimately become Afton’s servant again. He had shown her consideration, even Lorenz had not. Everything about that creature confused her. There was no question he meant her harm, but at the same time he planned for her comfort.

“Your new clothes will be ready soon.” Lenore’s voice drew Afton away from her thoughts of Malice. It would be nice to wear real clothes again. Afton was currently wrapped in a robe, all other clothing no longer fit her transformed body. She could not even enjoy the clothing Darden had brought from Earth. “I never believed the fables of vampire soul mates until I saw you this morning.”

“What stories?” Afton inquired.

“Your soul mate and Drake were turned by the original vampire. I do not know if he had a name, he is usually referred to as The Creator. After countless millennia of surviving, a woman fell through a portal and captivated the original one.
